2019 Stadium Sailing

Class Members & Friends —

We had another festive and entertaining Detroit Cal-25 Winter/Season Awards Party two weeks ago. There was plenty of good food and drink for all to enjoy. Thanks to all those that brought a dish to share and for swapping sailing stories & tall tales throughout the night. The annual Hummers were delicious too!!!

Our special guest speaker, Wally Cross, talked about and extended an invite to the class to participate in Stadium sailing this upcoming season. Instead, of racing the normal DRYA GPYC Summer Regatta (W/L) C-Course race, 6/29, we would race several short races just off the GPYC wall. This is the exciting and popular format the J-70’s have been following complete with spectators and race commentators. Wally indicated that there will be plenty of space to moor our Cals at GPYC in between and during the regatta. Wally is preparing documentation that I will forward soon detailing the event in greater detail.

Several members expressed a strong interest in participating in this event – including me. I’m hoping we can draw more boats to this regatta than we have been getting out on the GPYC Summer Regatta. We are working with DRYA to have this event potentially scored as a normal DRYA regatta also. We will have to vote on the matter as to how the event will be scored determining the Season Championship – an agenda item for our Spring meeting.

Post Wally’s presentation, one idea for getting possibly more boats racing in this event would be to race JAM. It was expressed that without flying the spinnaker there might be less dependence on obtaining crew resulting in better turnout.

I would like to report back to Wally how many boats might turn out for the Stadium sailing. I know the season is still months away but looking to get a feel for the interest level from the entire class. Please respond back if you think you will participate or not. What is your thought on JAM?

A copy of this email has been posted on the Cal-25 website as a blog page so that we can have comments/suggestions the entire fleet can follow without sending a receiving a bazillion emails. After landing on the home page http://www.cal25.org, click on the right most tab labeled “Latest Posts”.

You can still email me if you plan to participate or not. I’m looking forward to hearing back from you…
